the CAT TONGUE® is preciously made by hand from natural clay. Master craftsmen of legendary Seto ceramics in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, specialize in a thousand-year-old art of traditional pottery techniques. The applied clay is a pure form of earth from Seto City, one of three high quality clay deposits in the world.
Our bowl is produced in a facility with a 165 year history of creating world-class products from earthenware. Craftsmen take pride in each masterpiece, conceptualized and built on a high level of quality and ingenuity.
Each bowl is conceived using a hand-made custom mold and thoroughly checked before drying.
The dried bowl is first fired at 800° C (1472° F) for six hours to increase durability. Dust and particles are efficiently removed to prepare for glaze application.

the CAT TONGUE® is coated with a custom glaze, resulting in a beautiful, warm white finish.
Custom white glaze is formulated specifically for the CAT TONGUE®. The glaze is applied to each bowl by hand, one by one.Efficient drying time is required for rigidity & a beautiful shine.
Each bowl is fired at 1250 degrees Celsius (2282 degrees Fahrenheit) for 21 hours to produce durability and shine. Our glaze has been officially tested and approved by Japan Food Research Laboratories as complying with U.S. FDA standards. Results from Elution Testing verify that there is no Lead or Cadmium in the glaze which could harm you or your cat.
Waiting for bowls to cool after 21 hours in the kiln. Craftsmen sand the base of the bowl to ensure all rough edges are smooth.
Thorough final inspection of each bowl. Numerous craftsmen are involved in the production process. A third firing is made at 840° C (1544° F) for four hours to seal our logos and measurements.
Three firings in the kiln produce a solid, sturdy, beautiful white glow, and a glass-like luster.
